THE National Capital District (NCD) police has been granted a licence to install close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras around Port Moresby.
NCD/Central police commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Anthony Wagambie Jr said the approval was given by National Information and Communication Technology Authority. He said they had been waiting for the licence to start installing the cameras.
A contracted CCTV company has put up cameras from the 8-Mile roundabout to the Erima Big Rooster roundabout.
“Scoping has been done and installation of cameras will commence as soon as possible,” ACP Wagambie said. “The Gordon area will cover the shopping centre, bus stop, Unagi Oval, and into the industrial area.
“(Then) we will move to Waigani (before continuing) into all parts of the city.
“We will be using WiFi to transmit signal as a live feed into the police operations centre.
“We want to test the capability of the network during the festive period but this has not eventuated due to the licensing issue.”
The CCTV system is funded by the China-PNG Friendship group.
It will be handed over to police after the signing of a memorandum between the police and the president of the China-PNG Friendship.
