THE driver involved in the accident at Mumeng’s Zenag in Bulolo, Morobe on Tuesday that claimed two lives and injured 24 others is now in police custody, says an official.
Morobe police commander Chief Supt Jacob Singura said that a mechanical fault in the truck resulted in the accident.
“They were negotiating a sharp bend when a trailer truck approached them in the opposite direction.
“The diver accidently hit the trailer at the back, causing it to run off the road and overturned from the driver’s side,” said Singura.
He said from impact, a male and a female passenger died instantly while 24 others received injuries and were transported to Mumeng health centre and later to Angau Hospital in Lae.
Singura said it was an unfortunate situation where two lives had been lost while many others received injuries.
He said the driver drove with negligence.
He said it was up to PMV owners, drivers and crews to make sure that vehicles were mechanically sound and reliable before they could be used to transport passengers and cargoes.
“As drivers, we have to think of the lives that we are transporting. The cause of this accident is brake failure.
“If proper checks had been done prior to taking the vehicle onto the road, such a fatal accident would have been avoided,” he said.
Meanwhile, Angau hospital could not be reached to confirm how many of the 24 that sustained injuries were released yesterday after being treated.
