‘Carbon trade makes change’

CARBON trade is not only to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the environment but also promotes existing sustainable activities, an official says.
Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) manager Terence Barambi form the office of Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) said carbon trade has other benefits apart from reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
“It provides an opportunity to support sustainable development and responsible economic development going forward,” he said.
Speaking during a climate change workshop in Port Moresby on Wednesday Barambi said REDD+ was a financial mechanism under the United Nations framework convention on climate change.
“It’s a mechanism focused in reducing emissions of carbon dioxide. Its a cross cutting issue that can be achieved by other sectors like agriculture, forest and environment and not an issue for the CCDA alone,” he said.
“It also helps in achieving these targets of revenue generation, equal opportunities and responsible sustainable development articulated within the medium term development plan 3 (MTDP-3).”
Barambi said most emission comes from commercial logging and commercial farming in PNG.
