THE Port Moresby Nature Park has reminded people about the importance of protecting rainforests and the natural environment across the country to mark International Day of Forest which was observed yesterday.
The theme for 2021 is “Forest restoration: A path to recovery and well-being”.
“Papua New Guinea was home to seven per cent of the world’s total biodiversity, which is very impressive as most of its flora and fauna cannot be found anywhere else,” park general manager David Thompson said.
“PNG is truly blessed with natural resources, diverse cultures and a rich biodiversity which we all have a responsibility to care for.
“With this, comes a bigger challenge and responsibility for us as a country in caring for our natural flora and fauna.”
The park says it would continue to educate and inspire visitors of the importance of PNG’s biodiversity through information, conservation and research programmes.
It educates over 24,000 school children within NCD and Central annually on protecting wildlife and plants.
Port Moresby Nature Park is a charity organisation that relies on grants and donor funding to operate.
Thompson said that by visiting the park, people helped support their efforts in preserving PNG’s native flora and fauna for future generations.
