National Capital District (NCD) guidance officer and career expo coordinator Elsie Tauye said a total of 4,571 Grade 12 students would attend the career expo in groups from their respective schools each day until Friday.
Tauye said there were 28 schools in NCD, with only two schools not participating in the expo.
“The expo is an annual event which is aimed to expose grade 12 students to different higher education institutions,” she said.
“So that students can learn about different courses and specific required grade point average (GPA) to be in a better position to make positive choices when filling online school leaver forms.
“It is also an opportunity for the students because some of them may not have smart phones to go online and search for information.”
Tauye said she believed the students would be equipped with information at the end of the week because they had about 30 exhibitors participating in the event.
Some of the exhibitors were University of Goroka, Papua New Guinea University of Natural Resources and Environment, Institute of Business Studies, Don Bosco Technological Institute, Flexible and Open Distance Education and University of Papua New Guinea.
Tauye appealed to teachers and technical colleges to participate as well in the next event as it was important for the students.
Waigani Christian College principal Susan Loi said the career expo was important because at most times, due to time constraints, homeroom teachers could not provide every information to the students needs regarding their career choices.
“In many cases, students with a good GPA miss out on spaces at any higher institutions because they lack knowledge about institutions and specific requirements.”
