Carnival in remote Wau end on high

KOBO soccer team from Wandumi village in Wau Rural LLG, Bulolo district, Morobe, won the Wau-Bulolo men’s title, beating Singlemu Warriors from Kaisenik village 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out in the final last week.                                            
Kobo found the back of the net twice and restricted Singlemu Warriors to one goal to claim the men’s title.   
In the women’s final, Singlemu Warriors turned the tables on Kobo by beating them 3-2 in another penalty shoot-out. 
In the senior men’s basketball final, Kapok Brothers led by veteran player Philip Channei proved too good for rivals Wau Jokers, edging them out by a mere point 31-30.
In the volleyball final Merek Penduk from Biawen village, Biangai area in Wau rural LLG claimed the men’s and women’s titles.
Morobe programme advisor for sports Ludwig Peka was pleased with the overall organisation of the sporting carnival which was sponsored by Wau rural and Wau-Bulolo Urban LLGs.
 Wau Rural LLG manager Judy Pokana and Wau-Bulolo Urban LLG Angkas Kupa were also present at the grand final and made presentation of trophies and cash prices to the winning teams and outstanding players. 
Match commissioner Dick Koromeng thanked the seven villages – Wandumi, Kaisenik, Biawen, Winima, Kwembu, Werewere and Elauru in Biangai in Wau rural LLG for participating in the sports. 
“I would like to thank all the sponsors namely Niuminco Mining for providing the sporting equipments, Pelgens Supermarket, Jabarnadi Trading and Nangamanga Trading for providing food and refreshments to the teams and officials and Mineral Resource Authority for providing all the stationeries. I also thank the local Wau police for providing security for the duration of the games,” Koromeng said.
