Bank South Pacific has advised its customers to avoid “carrying a lot of cash” when doing banking because criminals target them.
BSP Retail general manager Paul Thornton, pictured, was commenting on an attempted robbery which took place this week involving a customer near the BSP Madang branch.
“To avoid carrying a lot of cash, individual customers are encouraged to use the various forms of electronic payments such as EFTPoS using bank cards, mobile and internet banking,” he said.
The attempted robbery took place on Balam Street outside the main entrance to the branch.
It is understood that the customer was unharmed and the would-be robbers fled after being chased by security personnel.
“Bank South Pacific PNG is advising customers and the public to be aware of their surroundings as they enter or leave any bank or shopping centres as criminals are targeting people who they believe are carrying large amounts of cash.”
Thornton said details of the incident were yet to be received.
