Cassowaries retain T20 Smash title

CASSOWARIES retained their title as champions of the Curtain Brothers T20 Smash tournament after defeating the Trakpro Mudwomen by 32 runs in the final at Amini Park in Port Moresby on Friday.
Mudwomen, led by Papua New Guinea Lewas’ Brenda Tau, defeated Mariners by four wickets in the semifinal with Tau scoring 51 not-out to help her side chase down an eight for 107 total from the Mariners (Mudwomen scored six for 108 in 19.2 overs).
The final saw a strong first innings from Cassowaries who batted three for 115 at the end of their 20 overs with Konio Oala scoring 28 not-out while teammates Boio Diho bagged 28 runs and Tanya Frank 23.
Mudwomen found less luck in their chase after scoring nine for 83 in 20 overs with the Cassowaries captain Kaia Arua taking three wickets while teammates Konio Oala, Esmie Igo and Geua Tom all bagged two wickets each to win back-to-back titles.
“It’s a great feeling to win for a second successive year and it’s nice to have a good bunch of girls in your side throughout the tournament,” Cassowaries skipper Kaia Arua said after the final. “It’s a very young side we have but we managed to put our heads down and get the job done right from the first round all the way to the final.”
