MORE than 300 casual workers fronted up at the Lae district’s treasury office yesterday demanding their wages for the past nine months.
Steven Waima said he and others had worked hard to keep the city clean but had not received any money from authorities.
He said they had patched up potholes, swept the roads, cut the grass, cleared trees and done other jobs.
“The only responses we have received since day one were ‘there is no money, come back tomorrow’ or ‘come back next week’,” he said.
The district treasury staff were unable to give the workers a favourable reply and  instead told them to go to the provincial government office.
It is understood that the provincial administrator told the workers that the money “had been ready ages ago” and that they should find out from the treasury office why they had not been paid.
