AT least 20 people have been arrested over pretty crimes and traffic offences near the Lae market – thanks to the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed by members of the Chinese community.
Market police station commander Gordon Matafimo said they tried out the two new CCTV cameras on Monday and immediately arrested 10 people. They tried it out again on Tuesday and arrested 10 more.
“In the past two days, we arrested 20 people (involved in) street sales, drugs and alcohol. We also monitored traffic offenders outside by using the CCTV,” he said.
“The CCTV is very effective and has greatly helped our work within the market. The market is one of the busiest areas in town. The CCTV has made our job easy. Thanks to the Chinese community for donating the equipment.”
Lae Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr said the cameras were already having an impact on the law and order situation in that area.
“They (law-breakers) see the cameras and know that they are being watched. (Law-abiding) citizens have nothing to worry about and continue with their normal business,” he said.
He said the footage was recorded and if an offence was committed, police could replay the tape and arrest the suspects.
He thanked Chinese community representatives James Lin, Steven Wong and Sam Wong for providing the equipment.
