THE Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) leaders’ summit in November 2018 are not in operation to assist the police operation in the National Capital District (NCD) to assist police identify criminal activities in the city.
NCD Met Supt Perou N`Dranou said the police were not using it because they had outstanding bills to pay to the operator and the Police Department did not have funds to settle those bills.
He said being able to monitor activity using the cameras would help them reduce crimes and identify offenders and it was on the government and police hierarchy to fund the use of CCTV in fighting crime.
N’dranou said from his visits to Oakley Haus most of the cameras were not functioning and if they were all operational, law enforcement’s ability to do their job would be improved.
There was a memorandum of agreement signed between the Police Department and the NCD Commission last Oct 11 for police to have control of the CCTV but this had not been done.
