MORE than 200 students at Boregaina Primary School in Rigo, Central, can now have access to proper hygiene and sanitation in school following the construction of new toilets and shower rooms.
Boregaina Primary School head girl Rowen Gari said many female students could not complete their studies due to a lack of proper water and sanitation in the school.
She said it was particularly hard for girls who were reaching puberty and could not cope with properly managing their menstrual periods and they stayed home because there was no water and proper toilets.
Gari said the students had been using pit toilets built by the school board and it was unhygienic.
“Most of us get sick and missed classes which affected our learning because of poor water and sanitation,” she said.
Gari said the students were now benefiting from the new ventilated improved pit toilets with proper sinks and water taps connected to tanks.
She said the school now had a modern facility that was built by the Anis foundation with funding from the Japanese government and United Nations Children’s Fund.
Head teacher John Wasigui said the UN’s water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash) project had changed the school.
“In the past, students skip classes because of no water and proper toilets, but, with the construction of the new ablution blocks, now students can come to school every day without worrying about the water problem,” he said.
