THE first phase of the K1million Koitaki-Itiki-Doe road was launched yesterday by Central Governor Robert Agarobe.
Agarobe said the road was one of the first in the country during the colonial days that held many historic stories of heroes who travelled and battled along the Kokoda Track during World War II.
“This road was called the Hubert Murray Highway during the colonial days and it has a history that links with our heroes who had battled the Kokoda Track,” he said.
“I will have to maintain this road for it has so much history that goes back a long way in terms of WWII.”
Central Works adviser Terence Aluna said the first phase of the construction was 12km from Koitaki to Itiki which cost K500,000 and the second phase would be another 12km from Itiki to Doe for another K500,000.
Aluna said the funding was from the Central government and Works was helping out with the construction.
“We are supervising the roadwork with our machineries,” he said.
