PORT Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry (POMCCI) president Rio Fiocco has welcomed the commissioning of the closed circuit television (CCTV) Control Centre in Port Moresby to help prevent and detect crimes in public places.
“POMCCI is supportive of the efforts by the police to better monitor and enforce the laws in the capital city,” Fiocco said.
“We believe that making Port Moresby a safer place will be better not just for the business houses but for our employees, residents and visitors in the city.”
Last Friday, NCD Governor Powes Parkop commissioned the Royal PNG Constabulary CCTV Control Centre.
This was one of the legacies of the Apec Leaders’ Summit.
Fiocco, who was also present during the commissioning, said: “We applaud the initiative by Parkop to have NCDC involved and working closely with the police to monitor things like graffiti that often occurs in the middle of the night.
“We are very glad to work closely with the governor and metropolitan superintendent to make Port Moresby a safer and better place for all.” He said one of the option that business houses could help was by paying for the installation of the CCTV in a particular neighbourhood.
“Then this could be added to the cameras and monitored by the police,” Fiocco said.
“Our members can also work with other interested groups to set up neighbourhood watch schemes throughout the city.” He commended the RPNGC for its continuous efforts to deter petty crimes at hot spots like bus stops.
“POMCCI would like to see either the police or NCDC better monitor the bus stations and ensure that passengers can travel safely on the PMV,” he said.
Fiocco said security was a top priority for business houses.
