NEW Ireland chamber of commerce and industry president Nolis Thomas says new measures released by National Pandemic Controller David Manning to allow tourists into the country is good for the province and country.
Thomas said New Ireland’s small tourism industry was greatly impacted as a result of the onset of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic with limited international tourists visiting the province.
He added that the new measure was not just good for tourism but business in general.
“New Ireland is among those provinces that embrace the concept of developing tourism as a business,” Thomas said.
“All the resorts in the province were badly affected.
“We have Nusa resort which enjoys large group of tourist coming on an annual basis, that was reduced to practically zero tourist arriving in the province.
“We have Nusa and Paradise Island and a couple of resorts on the East Coast of New Ireland and there’s one on the West Coast.
“All of those were badly affected by the lack of tourists arriving in the province.
“Now with the announcement of the new Covid-19 measures, I think those tourist destinations will start to enjoy an influx of tourists again.”
Thomas said locals would also benefit from the spin-offs from their small businesses when tourists returned.
