Chamber talks about struggles

LAE’S business climate remains consistent from grassroots businesses to major companies, says Lae Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) president John Byrne.
Responding to questions from The National, Byrne said while the local economy was not depressed it was not booming either.
“Covid’s (Coronavirus) impact on Lae is apparent more so when lockdowns are imposed due to outbreaks as we have had twice in the past 18 months,” he said.
“A concern at present is the recent increase in Covid-19 case numbers.
“Pockets of the Lae and Morobe economy have struggled for the past 18 months including hospitality, hotels and clubs, including gambling houses – all who employ people and most who are honest, ethical and professional businesses.
“The recently invoked pandemic measures, whilst unquestionable in their need and intent due to the uncertainties of the Covid’s impact, make it harder for this segment of our business and working community to survive.”
