Chamber welcomes decision

THE Madang chamber of commerce and industry has welcomed the lifting of the ban on the sale of fish in the province.
Chamber president Kevin Murray told The National that people had resumed fishing and selling fish, an important protein.
Fish is also slowly filling freezers in shopping centres.
National Court judge Justice David Cannings made a ruling on Feb 19 to lift the ban imposed by the provincial government over a pollution dispute.
“I would like to thank Justice David Cannings for doing this because we had a situation over the last six months where people who depend on fish for their livelihood were affected. Fish is part of their diet,” he said.
The ban was lifted after the court found that there were no scientific evidence in support of the ban and no law supporting the ban either.
