THE New Ireland provincial government’s policies in providing free and subsidised education fees, pensions for the elderly and disabled and the “Roof Over Heads” programmes are in line with the American values in promoting peace and liberty for all men throughout the world.
New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan made this remark during a visit by United States of America Ambassador Teddy Taylor, the first by a US envoy to the province.
Sir Julius said all these policies had been implemented through a learning process and adopting principles from US leaders throughout history in their campaign to bring liberty to all men.
“We have learned from America and others how to live in freedom and to respect the liberty of others and how to cooperate for the good of all,” he said.
Taylor took time on his five-day visit to meet with the women’s ecumenical committee and women leaders of the province.
Sir Julius thanked the Americans on behalf of New Ireland, recalling the campaign during World War II to liberate his people from enemy occupation of the island.
He thanked the US government for providing significant aid through numerous international institutions such as the United Nations, Asian Development Bank and the World Bank.
Taylor’s visit covered Kavieng and Namatanai districts and  the Lihir Gold mine, Pangoh village on Lihir, Tanga Island, Huris village in Susurunga and Nasko.
