Change parliament to change PNG, Yama says

MADANG Governor Peter Yama says to take back PNG as stated by Prime Minister James Marape, it has to start with the leaders in Parliament.
Yama mulled over how this would happen or be achieved, and said: “I totally support the statement of Marape but my concern is are we able to take back PNG within the next two years?
“Members of Parliament have become rich overnight and drive around in expensive vehicles.
“If we really believe in fighting corruption, we must start with this House,” he said.
Yama said leaders had always been regarded as corrupt and this had to be proven by an overhaul.
“We must overhaul principles of MPs, overhaul the Ombudsman Commission, give more teeth to the courts and the judiciary system and look at the police force.
“Leaders must declare their interest – what they own in terms of businesses etc.
“We must also respect each other.”
Yama said the fight against corruption should start with taking a stock of all the leaders.
“I will declare my interest to Ombudsman Commission so PNG will know who Peter Yama is.
“We have to check all the leaders if we want to seriously fight corruption.
“If we change in Parliament, we will change PNG.
“You want to fight corruption through the Independent Commission Against Corruption and empower the police force.
“If we do not change ourselves, we will have a conflict of interest situation.”
