THE Malaysian Association of Papua New Guinea and the Malaysian Business Community have raised K865,000 through  its 17th annual charity golf competition last Friday followed by their presentation dinner on Saturday at the Stanley Hotel.
The money raised will be donated to 20 charities and non-government organisations that provide services and support in primary healthcare.
The presentation dinner was held to show MAPNG’s appreciation to the business houses and individuals who supported and participated in the charity golf tournament.
As part of their charity fund raising programme MAPNG and MBC host an annual golf tournament involving corporate teams.
MBC Charity Golf organising chairman Ivan Lu told The National that the event was held annually since 2001.
“This is the 17th year that the event was held. In total, over the years, we have raised K8 million. Tonight we raised K865,000,” Lu said.
“Every year we have about 38 to 40 corporate teams that take part, we conduct everything in an open and transparent  manner that builds trust with a lot of businesses.”
Lu thanked the Malaysian community and businesses who donated prizes for the teams that took part in the golf tournament.
“Despite the tough economic climate we are facing, it was good to see them lending a helping hand to support this worthy cause.”
The funds raised from this year’s charity golf event were made up of: K133,000 registration fees from 38 teams; K280,000 from raffle ticket sales; K156,000 from dinner ticket sales and K296,000 from cash donations.
“From a humble beginning in 2001, the event raised a mere K27,000. The amount increased gradually over the years and last year, we did K930,000 which was shared among 20 charities and NGO organisations,” Lu said.
“For the last 17 years, we have raised and donated close to K8.3 million. As for tonight’s event, we have so far achieved a total of K865,000.
“Although the amount is not the most important part of this fundraising event, more important to me is that we have done our part and played our role in this social responsibility.
“I think regardless of where you are coming from, whether a corporate or an individual, we all should play a role to assist one way or the other those unfortunate ones in our community.”
