Check Digicel’s data rollover plan

Letters

THE current data rollover plan introduced by Digicel should be reviewed.
The plan allows Digicel to automatically debit subscribers’ accounts when their subscription period expires.
On the face of it, there is nothing sinister about it but there is doubt about the plan’s logic.
The logic is that Digicel debits subscribers and stores that in a suspense account and in order to buy back the debit balance in the suspense account from Digicel, the subscriber has to purchase new credits for the plan.
The subscriber ends up paying twice for the plan.
If the subscriber does not top up, Digicel forfeits the debit balance in its suspense account which is a bonus for the company.
This is a scam that forces the subscriber to pay more.
The other problem is that when plans are subscribed to, the credits disappear without good reason.
That happened to me a number of times. For instance, on Dec 1, I purchased a K5 one-day plan and it disappeared soon after.
This needs to be investigated by the National Information and Communication Authority. However, the authority is not performing its roles of regulation and price control. Its roles should be scaled down and price control should be transferred to the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission.
