A Central man died in a fatal accident along the Wards Road at Hohola, Port Moresby over the weekend, according to National Capital District traffic police.
Speaking on behalf of the officer- in-charge of traffic, Senior Constable Geoffrey Steven told, The National that the accident occurred as a result of one driver failing to give way.
He said a Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to Mapai Transport was going from Waigani towards Hohola and was making a right turn towards Kamarere Street and a Toyota Hiace bus, owned by Chesire Disability Services, was travelling from Hohola bus stop along the Wards Road towards Waigani Drive when they collided at the junction.
He said the driver of the bus,  identified as William Bite, 36, from Nikiva village in Bereina Central, was on his way to pick up his boss at Gerehu when the accident occurred.
He said bystanders struggled to rescue the driver and with the help of fire fighters and ambulance workers, they managed to pull him out of the vehicle but he died.
Steven said the driver of the other vehicle sustained injuries and police were waiting for him to recover before he could be formally arrested and charged.
“According to the investigation carried out, the Land Cruiser was hit in the front left-hand side so that means that he (the driver) did not give way to the vehicle from the right.”
