Children celebrate National Disability Day

Children from St Joseph Primary School gladly accepted children with disability from Callan Services to celebrate National Disability Day in Chimbu on Friday.
So much so that they were happy to be taught and learn along with them.
It was the first time the school was involved with Callan Services to celebrate the event at Mingende Catholic Mission in Kerowaghi.
The theme for this year’s day was “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”.
St Joseph teacher Lapu Dingi said they were delighted to accept students with special needs to learn with them.
She thanked the school for implementing the inclusive education policy in Chimbu.
“Assimilating and accommodating people with the needs of disability in any environment or setting is something that many people or organisation cannot do, simply because they do not know how to handle them,” she said. “But getting to know these people with disabilities at an early age will help in working together.”
Dingi said six children with special needs were attending the school.
Callan Services coordinator Angela Mua said she had been working with people with special needs for 14 years and it required patience, commitment and dedication.
About 40 people living with disabilities attend the service centre in Mingende.
