THE Buk Bilong Pikinini school programme in Lae is one of the 16 in the country that celebrated its 10th anniversary on Friday.
The programme started at the Lae Eriku campus in 2009 and is now located at the Unitech East Taraka campus and provide positive results for vulnerable children in early learning and formal education.
Children attending the centre  are between the ages of three and five years coming from the nearby Uni block, West Taraka, East Taraka, Tenth City and a few from within the  Unitech campus.
Divided into two sessions per day, with 40 students per session, there are about 80 children attending the school each day, not including children who come to use the mini library every afternoon.
The children take part in activities like pre-writing, pre-reading, phonics and other fun and game activities.
BSP, AusAID and Steamships are among the major sponsors of the programme.
The programme’s regional coordinator George Kagl said the school was very successful in proving an education opportunity for students and with the increasing number of students but there was a need for more support to sustain the school.
