Children’s library programme gets support to distribute books

PUMA Energy renewed its sponsorship contract with the Buk Bilong Pikinini programme last Thursday.
Buk Bilong Pikinini, which translates to “books for children”, plays a vital role in giving children of various background, an early start to getting educated, building awareness and giving them the opportunity to aspire to live their dreams.
Puma Energy’s support through the supply of fuel and lubricants will go a long way in assisting the programme distribute books to children’s libraries established around the country.
The children’s libraries are located in Port Moresby, Alotau, Lae, Goroka and Tari.
“We thank Buk bilong pikinini for providing learning opportunities for the most vulnerable children in society who miss out on formal education, which is a part of our five pillars of community social responsibility in the country which cover: road safety awareness, environment and conservation, education, license to trade imperative and emergency first response,” Puma Energy said in a statement.
Buk Bilong Pikinini was established in 2007 with a mission to help increase literacy rates in the local communities.
It aims to foster a love of reading and learning, thus raising children’s aspirations and increasing literacy rates in the country.
Buk Bilong Pikinini currently has 18 libraries across PNG and developed the Buk Bilong Komuniti programme.
This programme seeks to address the needs in the communities at different levels:

  • To make book donations to schools and proactive communities, including to remote areas;
  • train community educators and teachers to conduct simple literacy programmes; and,
  • To work with corporations and non-government organisations to establish libraries.
