Chimbu to be fish feed producing hub

THE National Fisheries Authority (NFA) will assist Chimbu become the main fish feed producing centre, acting managing director Justin Ilakini says.
He said feed production was an important part of the development of aquaculture in the country.
The authority signed an agreement for counter funding for the construction of a fish feed facility in which the NFA would contribute 60 per cent and the provincial government 40 per cent of the funding.
“I would like to make Chimbu the leading feed producer in Papua New Guinea,” Ilakini said.
“Feed production is one of the very important input towards the development of aquaculture in PNG.
“Currently, we are importing a lot of feed from overseas and it is very expensive.
“With this facility, Chimbu should look into continuing to increase the production of feed.
“Whatever you need in terms of feed production, we will support Chimbu so that it can be the centre of feed production in the country to supply fish farms across the country. That could be one of your major income streams in the province.
“The supply and the sale of it.”
Chimbu Governor Michael Dua said the people were already using their own initiative so the provincial government and the NFA needed to support them.
