China gives K2.5mil to help victims

THE Chinese government has donated K2.5 million towards the earthquake relief and restoration efforts “as a good friend and brother”.
Yao Ming, the deputy chief of mission at the Chinese Embassy in Port Moresby, said China wanted to help PNG rebuild properties damaged during the 7.5 magnitude earthquake.
Ming extended his nation’s sympathy and condolences to the Papua New Guinea Government and its people.
“Papua New Guinea has been a good friend and brother to China and we stand with you at this time,” he said.
Earthquake Emergency Disaster Restoration team leader Dr William Hamlin thanked China and its people for their support.
“The US$800,000 (K2.5 million) will make a big difference in helping to provide relief and restoring the earthquake affected areas,” he said.
Hamlin also thanked the Chinese government for the assistance in clearing roads blocked by landslides.
“The clearing of roads made a big difference in helping to save lives that would have otherwise been lost if there was no road,” he said.
“It also helped get help into the affected areas,” he said.
