A TEAM from China is in the country to train and encourage locals in the Highlands region on domestic rice production.
The Chinese rice experts visited Toguba High School in Western Highlands yesterday to teach students and staff how to harvest their produce.
The school, located in Tambul-Nebilyer, started planting rice last year.
The team of experts was keen to promote the Chinese upland rice for both consumption and sale.
Surrounding communities at Toguba and Malda were also beneficiaries of this rice project.
Chinese team leader Shihuai Guan and his team taught staff and students the basics of harvesting.
Guan said it was an ongoing project which the Chinese government and the National Government were promoting.
He said people should not miss the opportunity of becoming rice farmers with the fertile land they had.
Guan said the rice project had also reached neighbouring Jiwaka and Chimbu.
“I’m happy to see that you are implementing the idea of growing rice in your garden,” he said.
