The National, Monday 15th April, 2013

ON April 9, we published a report under the headline “Chow admits ammo charge” which stated that Lae Biscuit Company managing director Ian Chow faces a two-year jail sentence and a fine of A$13,000 (K29,000) after pleading guilty on April 4 to illegally exporting firearms components.

The report said he would be sentenced a week later when in fact the court later that day placed him on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

He was also ordered to donate A$10,000 (K23,000) to Lighthouse Foundation.

In passing judgment, the Melbourne court magistrate said the matter should never have reached the court as it was lawful to export such items if only Chow had applied for a permit.

The court was told that Chow, who has for a long time been assisting the Lae police, chose to take a shortcut as Papua New Guinea was approaching a general election and the police were short of ammunition.
