Church bells annoying

Letters

THE ringing of church bells by two United church groups at Taikone every Sunday and during the week is deafening and very annoying.
I am disturbed from my sleep every Sunday by the bells rung by the Hula and the Iokea congregations who live nearby.
On Sundays, the Hula congregation rings their bell as early as 6am.
A few minutes later, the Iokea congregation rings theirs.
Out of curiosity, I decided to count the number of times the bell rang. I keep a record for the two churches in Taikone – the Hula and the Iokea United church and the Taikone Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church.
On Saturdays, the SDA church rings the bell at 6am, 9am, 10:15am and 4pm.
At times, the bell would ring four or five times. The Iokea and Hula bells are rung at 6am, 7am, 9am and 9:30am.
The Hula congregation holds the record of hitting the empty gas cylinder many times more than other congregations.
Last Sunday morning, they rung the bell more than 100 times at 6:08am.
I lost count at 7am, but at 9am, the bell rang 97 times and at 9:30am, it rang 40 times.
This was followed closely by their sister church, the Iokea congregation.
But that was not over.
Every Sunday, the Hula and the Iokea congregations compete with each other in ringing the bell.
I lost track of the count last Sunday because the bells rang frequently throughout the day.
Interestingly, the Hula and Iokea congregation belong to the same church, the United church.
Their churches are situated about 200m apart from each other.
Can the two congregations come up with an understanding on when to ring their bells?
Church bells were used in the colonial days because many people did not have watches to tell time.
With the influx of mobile phones, we cannot continue to treat our people like the colonisers did before.
Let the people decide for their own salvation.
Church bells cannot rule the lives of people like robots.

Annoyed,
Taikone
