CHURCHES know the people who need help in the community so they continue to help distribute food from the Sapotim Wantok Foundation , a church official says.
The foundation is an initiative of Prime Minister James Marape launched in April to help the needy in the community during state of emergency.
Foundation chairman Ps Aki Pawa said 150 bags of sweet potatoes (kaukau) were distributed throughout Port Moresby last week.
The distribution was done by the Adventist community service of the Central Papua Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Pawa said the kaukau was donated by the people of Daulo in Eastern Highlands.
“It was actually a token of appreciation to the prime minister (Marape) who visited the province recently,” Pawa said.
“The kaukau bags were then given to Sapotim Wantok Foundation to distribute.
“I would like to thank the people of Daulo for their generosity.”
Pawa said individual churches were adding other food items and goods on top of the kaukau and were distributing them to the community.
He said bananas and 450 bags of kaukau were donated by the people of Henganofi to the foundation and were distributed last month.
