TOKARARA United Church, in Port Moresby, farewelled long-serving deacon Tarai Tapan and deaconess Renagi Kila last Sunday.
Church chairman Kila Pou said Kila’s retirement came after the passing of his wife which was under the church rules while Tapan’s was due to her reaching the retirement age of 65.
“The celebration was moving and emotional as they were both great contributors towards the running and functioning of the church,” he said.
Pou said it was the first in the church’s history to farewell two deacons of the church and challenged the congregation to fill the vacuum.
“Two of them were hardworking, committed and loyal servants of God,” he said.
Tapan, and Kila were members of the Hula community group within the church.
Tapan in his farewell speech, said he was committed to serving God all these years and he planned to never give up his faith.
He said a replacement deacon had been chosen from the Hula group who was willing to take up the challenge.
The ceremony was witnessed by the church pastor Reverend Morea Eno, super minister of the Port Moresby north circuit Raka
Aiga, church leaders, youths and others.
