A CHURCH has hosted a conference for youths to look at issues like drugs, alcohol abuse and lawlessness.

The Rihona Memorial Circuit of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of PNG hosted the forum for young people in Eastern Highlands, Madang and Morobe. The Rihona circuit is in Henganofi in the church’s Kainantu district of Eastern Highlands.

Based in the Dunatina local level government, Rihona is known as the first and major centre of marijuana production and distribution in PNG.

The church’s social concern director, Sere Muhuyu, said the meeting was an inter-active workshop and awareness for youths to help them understand the negative social impacts of drugs and alcohol on people.

Muhuyu said the 120 participants were divided into three groups – non-marijuana users, distributors and producers, consumers and distributors.

Group members were given the opportunity to discuss the many negative impacts of illicit drugson their lives, families and communities.

He said many wept openly, apologised to their families and communities and asked forgiveness from God.

The church is seeking ways for these young people to fit back into society after giving up their illegal activities.

The church’s national youth director, Reuben Mete, said the church wanted to see young people involved in activities that would support and give them economic independence.
