Churches and government

Letters

THE idea of Papua New Guinea being a Christian nation emerged from the manner in which our pioneers embraced the gospel when it reached our shores.
They accepted it graciously, with commitment and dedicatedly spread the Gospel of Jesus across our beautiful country.
Religious freedom was then conceived and has been engraved into our Constitution.
Regardless of 800 different languages, customs, traditions and natural landscapes from the mountains to the low lands and across the islands, unity triumphs.
This is a unique and distinctive aspect of this country no-one can boast: It is the work of God through His human agents.
The determination of our pioneer missionaries to spread the Gospel of Jesus prepared a way forward for establishment of a Government of one people, one country.
Our pioneers set the Biblical foundation of formation of the Government, the principle of unity, so we have to stand together, pay homage to God and not to our cultural heritage.
Our system of Government is based on democracy which promotes values that hugs unity.
They are respect, fairness, equality, honesty, trust and love.
As such, the values must be practically manifested – not in words – for practicality gives perfect impression.
The churches are to give loyal support to the Government so long as its claims to not conflict with the claims of God.
The essence of the covenant is to work with God to promote unity for the country.
