AN environment awareness group in Western has given more than K30,000 in cash to various churches in East Pangia, Southern Highlands.

Mawar Land and Resource Awareness (MLRA) made the presentation in appreciation for the good work of the churches.

Chairman of the MLRA group Mathew Karu gave the amount to churches during the Wesleyan Church youth camp two weeks ago at Alia village in Pangia.

The Wesleyan youth staged the camp at Alia in East Pangia to raise funds to renovate and maintain one of the oldest church buildings.

Karu stepped in during the camp and presented K30,000 in cash to the youths to carry out their vision to maintain the church building. He also gave K2000 to the Assemblies of God (AOG) Church, K2000 to the Papua New Guinea Bible Church (PNGBC), K2000 to ALC  and a further K20,000 to the Wesleyan Church.

Karu said this was his commitment towards the churches in East Pangia in the Ialibu-Pangia electorate.

He said MLRA was a group carrying out awareness throughout the country to protect, restore and replace the natural environment.

Karu said he has been travelling throughout the country and when he came to Alia he was convinced that he had to assist the youth carry out their vision to restore and maintain the church building.

“Church plays a key role and I need the church to also help MLRA carryout the awareness on protecting the environment which is a blessing from God.

“God gives and blesses us and we have to give back to him and that is to support the work of the church,” Karu said.

Karu said he was happy to see all the youths, especially drug addicts numbering more than 30, change their lives.

“I’m moved by what the church is doing in the most remote part of the province and MLRA is pleased to come and assist,” he said.

Meanwhile, as part of the MLRA goal protecting and restoring the environment, Karu also gave more than 1000 gum tree seedlings to church members to plant.

National superintendent of the Papua New Guinea Wesleyan Church Rev Roy Muwa thanked Karu and the group for the funding assistance.
