THE Coffee Industry Corporation through its Productive Partnerships in Agriculture project is organising more than 1000 farmers in Morobe for a household survey.
The survey will involve 1065 growers or households from six groups:

  • Pelato Kofi Grup (95 households) and Kei Rural Coffee Cooperative (200 households) in Buang;
  • Mato Coffee Group in Mumeng (210), Gamin Coffee Cooperative in Waing (230);
  • Kwaita Mini Coffee Plantation in Wantoat (260); and,
  • Irumu Coffee Group in Wampar (70).

The farmers will take part in CIC-PPAP industry rehabilitation activities covering 531 hectares.
The groups will operate under CIC-PPAP’s lead partner Niugini Coffee, Tea and Spices Ltd following the signing of a partnership agreement last month worth K1, 562,446.
The survey will collate baseline data or information on the labour unit per household who contribute to coffee production, the level of education of people in a house, working tools required by farmers, and farming practices including methods used to dry coffee beans.
“A baseline information is vital for us to properly plan and deliver the kind of help required by the farmers as we’re doing in the highlands provinces,” said monitoring and evaluation consultant for CIC-PPAP Abner Yalu.
The survey will provide data on coffee production and income for participating households in the past 12 months, market accessibility which includes condition of roads farmers use to sell their harvest.
The status of coffee gardens that require rehabilitation or improvement to increase coffee production and quality will be established as well.
Farmer Laboni Yomsa of Kwaita in Wantoat said: “With the help of tools and training, we will improve our coffee gardens.”
