GOALKEEPER Matheson Nasa saved the day for Toti City FC against FC Morobe Wawens in the main game of the National Soccer League double-header on Saturday in Lae.
The competition leaders escaped defeat at the hands of improved Morobe Wawens outfit to win the encounter 3-2.
In the first game of the double header Besta United beat Buang FC 3-1 to stay within the top four.
Nasa stood out to save the day for City as the competition leaders collapsed in all departments against Morobe Wawens. The City boys were cornered with breakdowns in the midfield as Wawens dominated the match pinning City across the turf.
However, Wawens could complete their set plays to turn the opportunities into goals even though they had better possession of the ball.
Almost five attempts at goal went wide as there was no accuracy from the strikers in front to convert the opportunities into goal.
Wawens captain Dallas Namuesh led by example as he, Philip Steven, Russel Kamapaka and John Bangaiba defended the backline well denying City’s Raymond Gunemba, Peter Dabinyaba Junior, and Mathew David any room to score.
The persistence by Wawens was rewarded at the 42nd minute mark with a goal to hardworking Ben Labio who beat Nasa to score ant put his team in front.
City capitalised on Wawen’s errors as Gunemba scored the second goal to take over the lead.
However, Morobe Wawens would not back off keep but kept knocking before Giwi Simon added his sides second for a 2-2 stalemate.
With six to go, an error by Wawens’ Alu Awi saw referee awarding a penalty to City that resulted in the match winner for City.
