NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop is asking city residents to take part in the Yoga Walk on Sunday before heading to Gordon at around 8am for a major address on violence against women by a top United Nations official.
In a press conference at NCDC yesterday, the governor said UN deputy secretary-general Amina J Mohamed and her delegation would participate in the Walk for Life before speaking on violence against women (VAW) and gender-based violence (GBV) at Gordon Market to commemorate International Women’s Day.
He said it was a significant event for the good of the city and is urging all city residents to join in to address some key social issues affecting every family and costing the city of developments. “Sunday walk is not a regular walk,” Parkop said.
“As the residents of the capital city of our country, we must make a commitment on this special Sunday that we want to end these societal diseases of VAW and GBV in our city in the presence of the UN deputy secretary-general.
“VAW and GBV were the biggest problems in our country affecting all family settings in society and that was one of the core reasons for the UN general secretary to be in the country to address the issues among others,” Parkop said.
He said it was time all males in society, including working class, rugby players such as the Hunters, sports personnel, fathers, grandfathers, brothers and uncles, women and girls to commit themselves on Sunday.
