City set to plant one million trees

ONE million trees will be planted at five locations in Port Moresby as part of this year’s World Environment Day celebrations, says National Capita District Governor Powes Parkop.
The trees, are to be supplied with the help of Total Energies, would be planted at Sana Peace Park, at Bisini, Boroko, Murray Barracks and UPNG.
It will be the biggest tree planting exercise in a single day on June 5, World Environment Day.
The tree planting will be the culmination of a series of activities leading up to this day.
When making the announcement, Governor Parkop urged all city residents to actively participate in and inspire change of behaviour.
“Our city’s goal for this World Environment Day is to create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable environment,” he said.
“Our efforts align with the vision of Amazing Port Moresby, and we are committed to creating a clean, safe, healthy and planned city.
“Through our collective efforts, we can make a significant impact and contribute to a healthier future.”
Parkop urged the city manager to double the efforts in keeping the city clean and safe.
“We can’t continue to clean and collect rubbish around the city all the time,” he said.
“We need to inspire our people to be more responsible.”
Parkop also mentioned that a total of 25 interested stakeholders have signed up to take part in World Environment Day activities including schools and some suburbs in the city.
City Manager Ravu Frank said the commitment shown by our stakeholders and partners Is commendable.
“Together we can make a tangible difference in addressing plastic pollution and creating a cleaner, greener city for all residents,” he said.
The activities leading up to World Environment day (June 5) includes Tree Kangaroo Day on May 21, city clean-up from the areas of Boroko, Gordon, Waigani, Hohola, Manu from May 21 to June 3.
The walk for the Environment will be on June 4 from Sir Hubert Murray stadium to Boroko and on June 5 one million trees are to be planted at Sana Peace Park, Bisini, Boroko, Murray Barracks and UPNG.
Followed by a panel discussion and art exhibition later in the afternoon at Apec Haus.
