Bank South Pacific (BSP) this week gave K10,000 for the 2019 Port Moresby Squash and Tennis Open to be hosted by the Port Moresby Racquets Club.
The event is from June 7-10.
A total of 160 athletes participated in last year’s tournament and more are expected to participate in both disciplines at this year’s event with players flying in from two major centres in PNG, which is Lae and Mt Hagen and also from North Queensland, Australia.
Port Moresby Racquet Club representative Merlyn Alarcos-Kriebisch thanked BSP for its support and said registration was still open.
“We encourage more to register,” Alarcos-Kriebisch said.
“It will also be a fun weekend and if you don’t play, come down and watch some great matches and support your upcoming national representatives who will be travelling to Apia, Samoa for the Pacific games,” she said. BSP sponsorship and events coordinator Amelia Minnopu presented the cheque on behalf of the bank.
“BSP is happy to support the Port Moresby Squash and Tennis Open recognising these two sports and promoting local talents and hosting visitors from all over the country and neighbouring countries,” Minnopu said.
“We believe that the partnership with Port Moresby Racquets Club will develop upcoming squash and tennis players through national tournaments such as this and we look forward and are excited to witness players from this tournament maintaining or exceeding their current rankings.
“BSP is proud of its record in supporting the community through various programmes including sport and in saying that I wish the organisers and the athletes of the POM Squash and Tennis Open all the best in this tournament,” she said.
