LAE City survived a brave Gulf Komara side to win 2-1 and book a spot in Saturday’s Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League (NSL) grand final against Vitiaz United.
The opening semifinal in Port Moresby on Saturday saw the defending champions begin the scoring in the first minute through a free kick by Ecuadorian Abdias Aguirre.
Led by Kila Gapi, Komara then tightened their defence to deny City any more scoring opportunities in the first half.
But after the break, City skipper Emmanuel Simon extended his side’s lead with a strike from outside the penalty area.
Komara’s Ilagi Geno and Jordan Kaven found little success in attack with City’s Alwin Komolong and Philip Steven muscling up in defence.
However, Komara were rewarded for their efforts with a consolation goal through winger Rupa Emil five minutes from fulltime.
“Our opposition gave us a great game,” City coach Bob Morris said.
“I thought we were going to win 2-0 but they scored and it lifted their spirits.
“However, we kept our cool and I’m very happy with the performance today.”
Komara coach David Aua commended his side for a strong performance against City despite the loss.
“I’m very proud of my players,” he said.
