OVERCROWDING is expected to ease for coastal villages in the Moresby South electorate with plans to build walkways and relocate some houses to create space.
The project at Koki-Wanigela was launched yesterday by local MP Justice Tkatchenko and National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop.
The initiative was welcomed by both villages who had expressed concern about the lack of space due to an increase in their population at the villages situated over Port Moresby shores.
Vanagi village chairman Walo Keto said the proposed construction of walkways was timely because congestion had posed health watch fears and villagers had become vulnerable to air airborne diseases such as tuberculosis.
Keto said the relocation of houses onto the walkways would allow for more space to build recreational areas in the village and for mobility.
Vanagi village would get three walkways while Koki-Wanigela would get 10.
The walkways, costing K30,000 each, are the initiative of Tkatchenko and supported by Parkop.
They have collaborated on other projects in Moresby South, including water supplies, new Koki market and fish market.
