A LETTER in this column on June 2 by one Christopher W Taweg trying to educate Papua New Guineans about world events with China and Russia on one side and the free world on the other side is best left to those who are more educated and can speak with clarity.
China’s ambition is all too clear and the entire free world with the major powers that defend democracy and freedom are going into a strategic global re-think.
All the island nations of the Pacific are strategically important to China in its plans but these island nations have always been and will always be democracies as adopted from their colonial past. Poor we may be but freedom we have and we will cherish and hold firm.
We are happy to remain friends and that will be that.
The long-term Chinese agenda obviously will involve security as can be seen by what happened in the Solomon Islands.
However, as a nation we have no security situation needing foreign intervention other than what Australia is forever able to do for our domestic situations.
While on that I feel obliged to seek further clarification on Taweg’s views on the biblical aspects of his views on the Ukraine/Russia conflict.
Tell us something specific.
Loans are standard practices the world over, but unwittingly tying one’s sovereignty and a careless and unresearched deal signed with such a giant super power can be costly at some point in time in the future.
That is a drama our leaders need to avoid at all cost while at the negotiation table with China.
