Clan receives ILG certificate

THE Badu Toneta clan of Kirakira in Moresby South, National Capital District, are now official landowners of the Akorogo land, commonly known as Kaugere, after they were issued their incorporated land group (ILG) certificate yesterday by the Department of Lands and Physical Planning.
Badu Toneta ILG chairman Sogo Kohu said the registration of the ownership title under their ILG marked an important day in the clan’s history.
Former chairman and clan elder Ken Rabura thanked the department saying that it had been a long 11-year struggle to secure the land title.
“We had to struggle during the last 11 years because you cannot get a (land) title by just walking into the Department of Lands and getting a title,” he said.
“There were mediations, there were court cases, there were arguments, letter writing, affidavits, research, all these were in there during the 11 years, but finally we got it.”
Rabura also advised the clan to be ready for other challenges that could happen after they had the title.
“Be proud and stand firm because there will be other disputes coming your way,” he said.
