TWO warring clans in Porgera have agreed to stop fighting after 11 years of violence which has claimed more than 100 lives and damaged many properties.
The Lai and Kalako clans from the Pyaub tribe of Laiagam signed an agreement on Friday to stop the fighting.
New Enga provincial police commander Chief Supt Joseph Tondop and defence force liaison officer Major Larry Laori, MP Tomait Kapili and Magistrate Regina Sagu witnessed the signing which was facilitated by church leaders.
“Fighting is not good. I will personally come to arrest anyone found to be breaching this agreement,” Tondop said.
The fighting began in September 2007 over a land dispute.
The Laiagam Primary and Laiagam High schools, health clinic, Highlands Bible College and churches had to closed because of the fighting.
