MOROBE’s Boana Lutheran High School in Nawaeb has been suspended for two weeks following student fights involving locals.
Injuries were reported.
Headmaster Tony Dudu said in the serious cases, one student suffered a broken leg while another suffered injury when shot with a wire catapult. Both were admitted and receiving treatment at the Angau Memorial Hospital.
Other students sustained minor injuries, were treated and released.
Fighting started on Monday between the male students who did not agree with some student leaders.
Locals also joined in, escalating the problem further with some of them also injured.
Provincial education adviser Keith Tangui and the senior school inspector, Gibson Dom, were briefed on the situation. Both agreed that school be suspended for two weeks.
Police were on site investigating the fight. “The situation at the school is okay,” Dudu said.
“On Wednesday (tomorrow) we will meet with the community and police to discuss how best we can solve the matter and let students complete this term.”
Meanwhile, Tangui advised all schools that duty teachers should constantly supervise students to avoid such things from happening.
He warned that the provincial education board would not tolerate student bullying in any of its schools.
“Bullying in schools will attract a stiff penalty,” he said.
