A GOVERNMENT delegation attending the Conference of the Parties (COP26) Leaders’ Summit in Glasgow, Scotland is also expected to meet British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
The delegation is led by the Minister for Environment and Climate Change Wera Mori, representing Prime Minister James Marape who decided to stay back because of the current Coronavirus (Covid-19) situation in PNG.
Mori is assuming full responsibility as Marape’s special envoy, according to a statement from the office of the prime minister.
Mori is expected to meet with chief executive officers of reputable global climate institutions such as Yannick Glemarec, the executive director of the Green Climate Fund.
They will discuss a simplified draw-down process of the K100 million annual pledge for climate change adaptation and mitigation.
Mori has been instructed to delegate the Treasury vice-minister Peter Isoaimo to attend meetings “as it would be a great international experience and exposure on global issues such as climate change and what PNG and the Pacific Island Forum member countries must do to achieve ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets as required by the Paris rule book to save Earth”.
The COP26 summit, attended by world leaders including US President Joe Biden, is seen as the “last hope to tackle climate change”.
