THE first ever climate-resilient plan and climate assessment report for New Ireland was launched on Friday by delivery partner Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).
Provincial administrator Lamiller Pawut said the launching was the provincial response and contribution to Papua New Guinea’s national determined contributions.
He said New Ireland’s integrated provincial development plan currently under development was informed by the climate-resilient plan and would be aligned to the PNG medium-term development plan 2023-2027.
The Climate-resilient plan follows three years of consultations with local stakeholders which started in 2019.
The plan includes priority actions for the province to adopt and mitigate climate change in the economic and social services sector with immediate to long-term goals and would prioritise building of climate resilience in fisheries, agriculture, transport and energy sub-sectors.
GGGI country representative Sakiusa Tuisolia said working with New Ireland to assess its green growth potential, climate vulnerability, and response had been a valuable learning experience for all stakeholders.
The launch was followed by a provincial executive council endorsement for the establishment of the PCCC based on a decision made on Sept 19, 2021.
The New Ireland climate-resilient plan, assessment report and PCCC endorsement was supported under the four-year climate resilient green growth project (2019 to 2022).
The key role of the committee is to coordinate efforts to combat climate change at the provincial level, communicate with the national government on climate action and provide climate-related advice for the benefit of the people.
The project is funded by the Australian government and implemented by Climate Change and Development Authority in partnership with GGGI and aims to enhance the planning capacity of PNG to be climate resilient and increase green growth in the three pilot provinces of New Ireland, Enga and Milne Bay.
