THE National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) has partnered with the Royal Papuan Yacht Club (RPYC) in a initiative to keep the ocean clean by preventing marine pollution, according to a statement from the agency.
NMSA said the partnership came under the “Clean ocean campaign” initiative which mediated responsibilities to prevent marine pollution and promote and improve a cleaner and safer marine environment in PNG.
The campaign is the first of its kind by RPYC which is a lead up to the World Ocean Day in June.
The clean-up took place along the beachfront at Daugo Island (aka Fisherman Island).
The island community came alive over the weekend when more than 50 NMSA staff volunteers apart from students from Daugo Primary School, staff from National Fisheries Authority, Sea Women of Melanesia, Conservation and Environment Protection Agency (Cepa), Water Police, and others, took to the beach and assisted the RPYC with the coastal clean-up.
NMSA operations executive manager Capt Krysztof Orlowski thanked the RPYC for the initiative, which was also assisting the authority to carry out its mandated marine pollution prevention responsibilities.
“There is a great need for stakeholders to work together to prevent marine pollution of our oceans and the event today is a success and is evident of such collaboration.
“Protecting our marine environment is very important to people of maritime provinces as they are dependent on marine life to sustain their livelihoods,” he said.
