THE Business and Professional Women’s club celebrated International Women’s Day in Port Moresby recently.
According to the Department of Implementation and Rural Development (Dird), women and men from different stakeholders discussed ways to recognise women and their achievements in Papua New Guinea.
The day was celebrated on March 8 to acknowledge the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and marked a call to action for accelerating gender parity and to fundraise for female-focused charities.
Under the theme “Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in the Covid-19 world”, a social media campaign was held to encourage women to “choose to challenge” and call out gender bias and inequality.
Vani Nades, a businesswoman already making a significant contribution in the business community and PNG, focused on entrepreneurship to create job opportunities in the areas of information communication technology and education giving priority to rural villages and communities.
Human rights activist Ruth Kissam and panelist Nades talked about forms of violence affecting women in PNG including sorcery accusation related violence.
Kissam shared her experiences, achievements, career and how she was raised in Laiagam, Enga, by her late father Pr Kissam.
“We need a strong rule of law, swift and decisive action from the Government,” she said.
“We need men, women and youths to be the voice for those who can’t speak for themselves.
“If we want a better world for our children tomorrow, we must choose to change ourselves today.”
